Atalanta 2-3 Milan: Early Calabria strike helps unbeaten Milan into second in five-goal thriller

Davide Calabria scored inside the first 30 seconds as Milan triumphed 3-2 over Atalanta to regain second place in the Serie A table on Sunday.

The Rossoneri captain tucked home the rebound after his initial shot was parried poorly by Juan Musso with the hosts caught cold, before Sandro Tonali profited from a Remo Freuler error to add a second and Rafael Leao rifled in a third.

Duvan Zapata smashed home a penalty after substitute Junior Messias was deemed to have handled the ball in the area after a VAR check and the striker set Mario Pasalic up to convert at the back post as the seconds wound down, but Gian Piero Gasperini s men left it too late to salvage a point.

The result sees Milan maintain their unbeaten record, with this their sixth win from their opening …

Germany will respond against Sweden, insists Low

Germany are facing the prospect of elimination from the World Cup after losing to Mexico but head coach Joachim Low insists the champions will respond against Sweden.

One of the favourites to reign supreme in Russia, Germany s hopes were surprisingly dealt a blow when they were sensationally beaten 1-0 by Mexico last week.

Talks of squad disharmony emerged after public criticism from Mats Hummels and others but Low said Germany are ready to get back on track when they face Sweden – who won their first game and could qualify – in Sochi on Saturday.

The players showed a reaction this week to the events on the weekend in terms of training, Low, who revealed Hummels will miss the must-win clash, told reporters on Friday.

Rodriguez returns to Burnley on two-year deal

Jay Rodriguez has left West Brom and returned to hometown club Burnley in a deal reportedly rising to £10million.

The one-time England international heads back to Lancashire on a two-year deal, with an option of an additional 12 months.

Burnley reportedly parted with £5million to activate his release clause and will pay the second half of the fee in 2020.

Rodriguez, 29, scored 41 goals in 129 appearances during his first spell at Turf Moor before moving to Southampton in 2012.

He switched to West Brom in 2017 and hit 22 league goals last season as the Baggies lost out in the Championship play-offs to Aston Villa.

The striker joined up with Sean Dyche s squad, including fellow new signing Erik Pieters, in Portugal on Monday.

Barcelona stand by Messi after tax fraud ruling

Barcelona have offered their backing to Lionel Messi after he was given a prison sentence for tax fraud offences.

The 29-year-old, along with his father, was found guilty of three counts of fiscal fraud related to image rights accrued between 2007 and 2009, and given a 21-month jail sentence by a Spanish court, along with a fine totalling €2million.

Neither Messi nor his father, Jorge, are likely to serve any time in prison as the sentence was less than two years for a non-violent offence and neither holds a criminal record.

Both men who have always denied any wrongdoing may appeal the decision, which came about despite a voluntary corrective payment of €5m made to authori

Red cards, penalties and controversy – Is Pique right to fear Madrid bias in El Clasico?

Allegations of refereeing bias are nothing new when it comes to the bitter rivalry between Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Claims of perceived partiality in favour of the sworn enemy have peppered El Clasico s rich history, but two of the most experienced protagonists on either side of the playing divide have dragged this particular battleground into the era of social media and 24-hour news.

Whenever a controversial call falls Madrid s way, Barcelona centre-back Gerard Pique cannot resist tweeting about it. When Pique tweets about refereeing decisions during Madrid games, Los Blancos captain Sergio Ramos cannot resist firing back via the nearest available microphone.

BREAKING NEWS: Henderson agrees new ´long-term´ Liverpool deal

Jordan Henderson has committed his future to Liverpool after signing a new long-term contract, the Anfield club have confirmed.

The England international midfielder joined Liverpool from Sunderland in 2011 and took a little while to win some fans over, but he has since gone on to become an integral player under Jurgen Klopp.

Henderson was made vice-captain in September 2014 and, although he endured an injury-disrupted 2015-16 season, he has been a midfield lynchpin ever since.

Following the departure of Steven Gerrard to LA Galaxy in 2015, Henderson was rewarded for his emergence as a leader, taking the armband full-time from the Reds great.

Neymar and Ganso played alongside each other at Santos between 2009 and 2012, both having come through the club s renowned youth academy.

Ganso eventually left Santos for Sao Paulo in 2012, with Neymar joining Barcelona a year later.

I am really looking forward to the match. It is going to be a really good game to play in, the kind of game that every player loves to be part of, Neymar told Barca TV ahead of their away fixture.

Plus I am playing against a former team-mate and friend as well. He is a friend not just on the field, but off the pitch as well.

Spurs agree Bissouma transfer

Tottenham Hotspur have reached an agreement with Brighton and Hove Albion over a proposed transfer of Yves Bissouma, according to numerous reports. The North Londoners, who managed to secure a place in next season s Champions League in a desperate scramble down to the final matchday of the Premier League campaign, will be paying £25 million for the services of the 25-year-old defensive midfielder.

Bissouma joined the Seagulls from LOSC Lille for around £15m in 2018. Since then, he s gone on to make a total of 124 appearances in all competitions, scoring six goals. His ability to read the game, intercept passes and break up opposition play is highly rated and his services have consequently been in high demand. Manchester United and Arsenal were said to be monitoring the situat…

Ange Postecoglou knows he can succeed at Tottenham by sticking to plan

Ange Postecoglou has cited the early part of Manchester City’s journey under Pep Guardiola as a reason why he has total conviction in his ideas at Tottenham.

Spurs have hit their first real rough patch under the Australian with three straight defeats coupled with a list of absentees which has reached double figures.

Postecoglou remains determined to stick with his attacking approach and could again line up with no recognised centre-back or defensive midfielder at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

While many would adopt a more pragmatic style against City, the Tottenham boss will double down on his philosophy and believes the best clubs stick to the plan when faced with hurdles.
